I'm back into my blog since I last posted several months back. And indeed, I have once again failed to make blogging a daily habit of mine. Actually sometimes it feels good to just jot down a thought or two a day as a reflection of my own. :)
I feel like writing a letter. Be it in english or in chinese. Technology has made it so convenient that people have forgotten the beauty of just writing using a pen on paper. Perhaps I shall write a letter for myself. To Felicia in 2015? Wonder how much would I change within the next 5 years. In terms of thoughts, behaviour etc.
Would my current and only group of best friends still be my best friends? Maybe 5 years down the road, any of my friends will get married and soon I might be receiving all the news of marriage. Could it be they are all going overseas for further studies and be back to singapore in the next 5 years. Or it could be the trend of emigrating away from singapore to some other european/australian/american countries for survival?
So many different kinds of possiblities that are open for options. Hmm.. 5 years from now, If nothing goes wrong, I should be having my final year as an undergraduate? Or perhaps I've just been graduated and busy touring around the world before searching for a job and settle down to the mundane working adult life? Perhaps I won't even be going to University and I've been working since graduation.
After typing so much, I guess, I still prefer a hand written piece of journal. It's less technical, less rigid and more simplicity in a sense. Words that are typed out seems to be lacking of some sort of element. The element of giving the writer a process of thought. Using a pen and paper, you can see the number of spelling errors and how your chain of thoughts are changing as you write through all the cancellation. Whereas typing just take that chain of thought away from you. When you type or spell a word wrongly, or even deciding that this thought shouldn't be penning down at all: all you've got to do would be using a backspace button and everything would be gone without a trace. No clue about what has went through in your mind, no clue about the mistakes made. No human element in it.
It's just another piece of writing on a virtual page in a virtual place. Use of spelling checker, all spelling errors can be corrected in an instant. This is for english language. What happens to Chinese language?
Typing in chinese has allowed people to be able to recognise the chinese characters. However, without the use of computers/phone to type, how many people can actually write out chinese character without searching the dictionary or referring back to a reference?
I shall write a few hand written letters this weekend and post them out to my friends.
One, to keep in contact.
Two, to get the hang of writing again (not just on school work).
Three, for my own leisure.
Four, to add a human element into a piece of writing instead of just typing and print on paper.
Writing vs Typing. I'm just going to side the writing even though typing would be so much convenient. Because it's tooo convenient using typing that I think writing it out using pen and paper would be a good way to remind myself how fortunate we are as compared to people in the past. It's time to experience some hardship and appreciate what we had now.
Maybe in future, we are all attached to a robot who will be typing out our letters for us instead. Till the day comes, I think humans might not be able to know how to write anymore!
